Bandizip ships as a single small installer, and that is the first thing worth knowing: the download is roughly six megabytes, not the several hundred that most archivers ask for. There is no bundled runtime, no .NET dependency, and no separate codec pack. The whole application is a native C++ build around Bandisoft's own Ark library.
Get the installer from Bandisoft
The only distribution points that matter are bandisoft.com, the Microsoft Store listing, and the Mac App Store for the macOS edition. Everything else — mirror sites, "cracked" builds, repacks on file hosts — is a copy of unknown origin, and an archiver is a poor place to take that risk because it runs with your user rights and touches every file you open.
On the official page, pick the Windows build that matches your machine. The page serves one installer that carries both the 32-bit and 64-bit binaries, plus a separate ARM64 build for Snapdragon laptops and Windows on ARM devices. If you are unsure, check Settings → System → About: a "64-bit operating system, ARM-based processor" line means you want the ARM64 package, not the x64 one.
Installer, Store build, or portable
Three delivery formats, three different trade-offs.
- Installer — the default. Registers the Explorer context menu, file associations and the shell extension, and updates through its own updater. Around 6 MB, installs to Program Files.
- Microsoft Store — same application, sandboxed install, updates handled by Windows. Convenient on managed machines where you cannot run an .exe, but the Store build historically lags the direct download by a few days.
- Portable — a zip you unpack anywhere, including a USB stick. No registry entries, no context menu entry, no file associations. Settings live in a folder beside the executable, which makes it the right choice for a locked-down workstation or a repair toolkit.
Silent install for a fleet
The installer accepts the usual NSIS-style switches, which is how most IT teams push it out:
| Task | Command |
|---|---|
| Silent install | BANDIZIP-SETUP.EXE /S |
| Custom folder | BANDIZIP-SETUP.EXE /S /D=C:\Tools\Bandizip |
| Unattended removal | Uninstall.exe /S |
Note that /D must be the last argument on the line and takes no quotes, even when the path contains spaces. Deploying through Intune or a login script, wrap the call in a package that waits for exit, otherwise Windows reports the install as finished before the shell extension is registered.
After the first launch
Two settings are worth changing on day one. Under Options → Settings → General, decide whether the free edition should show the ad panel; the Standard edition cannot remove it, but it can be kept out of the way. Under Settings → Archive, set the default extraction folder behaviour to Smart Extraction, which is the feature that removes the redundant folder layer most other archivers create.
If you handle files from East Asian sources, also open Settings → Code Page and leave auto-detection on. That single checkbox is what stops a 2011 ZIP full of Korean filenames from turning into mojibake, and it is covered in more detail in our code page guide.
macOS and the paid editions
The macOS build is a separate product on the Mac App Store and is a paid download; it is not the same binary as the Windows one and does not carry the same edition structure. On Windows, the free Standard edition is fully usable for personal and commercial work — Bandisoft explicitly allows business use of the free build — while Professional and Enterprise add the password manager, archive repair, in-archive image preview and antimalware scan.
One last check after installing: open any archive, press F5 to test integrity, and confirm the version string under Help → About matches the release notes. An archiver that silently fails integrity checks is worse than no archiver at all.
